Museum Shop Sales Associate





The Sales Associate position with the Saint Louis Art Museum is a support role for the Museum's retail Shop. The expectation of this position will be to maintain a level of awareness and proactivity throughout the day, and to respond accordingly to ensure customers are well-cared for in a timely, professional, and friendly manner. This means more than making oneself available, but having a true customer service mindset; the ability to proactively interact with customers in asking questions to help them find what they may be looking for, an understanding of product lines and pricing to make suggestions, and having a general awareness and skill for helping customers feel welcome and appreciated. The goal of this role should be for the customer to leave the Shop happy, merchandise in-hand, and feeling positive enough about their experience and their purchase to share that feedback with others. Candidates for this position will have the opportunity to gain additional retail experience in working with an array of clientele, a variety of products and price points, and within a beautiful, unique Shop. The Shop hosts a mix of regular shoppers, out-of-town guests, and visitors that come specifically to browse the unique merchandise for special occasions within the Museum as a nationally renowned St. Louis landmark.

Ideal Candidate



If you are a friendly person who enjoys the opportunity to approach people, and can confidently ask questions to determine their needs as well as make suggestions, this role may be a good fit for you. The majority of your time may consist of working as a cashier at the point-of-sale. Your previous experience and the ability to learn quickly and comfortably to operate in a boutique retail setting is necessary for success in this position. Additionally, if you enjoy an active work environment in which standing, and working with products and stock is something you like to do, that will also be part of this role. The ideal candidate for this position will be someone who communicates professionally and respectfully with others, is approachable and willing to jump-in as needed to help with tasks as assigned, takes direction well and runs with it as a team - player. Accurate cash handling experience and balancing closing requirements are essential skills for this position.



Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Provides outstanding customer service.

* Has the ability to achieve sales goals.

* Proactively approaches the customer in a friendly manner to offer assistance, make suggestions, and upsell to the customer's needs.

* Serves as main cashier on sales floor.

* Store opening and closing responsibilities such as filling in merchandise and recovering the store from the day prior, counting drawers, cleaning, and organizing merchandise.

* Completes sales transactions in an accurate, professional, timely and expedient manner.

* Straightens and re-stocks merchandise as needed to maintain an aesthetically pleasing and organized environment for customers.

* Prices merchandise as needed.

* Restocks supplies of bags, boxes, tissues, and other supplies on sales floor.





Additional Requirements:

* Must be able to lift up to 35 lbs.

* Must be able to stand for long periods of time.

* Fine motor skills are required in cash handling and in working with small merchandise.

* The ability to easily access boxes/cases that are low to the ground, deep, or high up is necessary.

* Bending, reaching, squatting, kneeling, and the ability to get up and down are necessary capabilities.

* The ability to use a step stool or ladder to retrieve boxes or merchandise is a required standard practice.





Minimum Qualifications: High school diploma required. Must be available to work evenings, weekends and some holidays as required. Must be able to maintain a neat, and well-groomed appearance due to close customer interactions throughout the day. Previous computerized register and cash close-out experience is required. One year of retail experience is required.





Preferred Experience: Some college coursework is preferred.Previous experience in working within an upscale or high-volume retail environment is necessary.





Additional Details:

COVID-19 Requirement: Must be fully vaccinated (including booster) to qualify for on-site interview and/or offer of employment.

Minimum of Pay Range: $15.89/hour

*Offer is commensurate with experience within range.

Status: Regular full-time; Benefits eligible on first day of employment.
